Our XM review

Overview

XM is the retail brand of the Trading Point group, which began operating in 2009 with a Cyprus-licensed investment firm and has since expanded into one of the largest forex and CFD brands in Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The company says more than 20 million traders have used its services, and it offers access to over 1,400 instruments through MetaTrader and its own XM app.

XM is aimed squarely at retail traders who want to start small. Its $5 entry point and simple account line-up have made it a common first broker for small-account traders in many emerging markets. Like several large brands, however, it runs a multi-entity structure in which international clients are served by an offshore company, while clients in Europe and Australia receive stricter local protections.

Regulation and safety

The main regulated companies we could verify are:

  • XM Global Limited – licensed by the Financial Services Commission of Belize under the Securities Industry Act 2021, licence 8557558. This is the entity that serves most international retail clients through xm.com.
  • Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd – authorised by CySEC, licence 120/10, serving EU clients. Eligible clients are covered by the Investor Compensation Fund up to the lower of €20,000 or 90% of a covered claim.
  • Trading Point of Financial Instruments Pty Ltd – ASIC AFSL 443670 in Australia.

Independent reviewers also list licences in jurisdictions such as South Africa, Kenya and the UAE, and note that the group's separate Trading.com brand holds further licences, including for the US market. The XM brand itself does not accept residents of the United States, Canada, Israel or Iran. All XM accounts include negative balance protection, and client funds are kept in segregated accounts. We did not find enforcement actions against XM in the sources reviewed, but clients of the Belize entity should be aware that protections there are thinner than under CySEC or ASIC.

Fees and spreads

XM's pricing is reasonable rather than market-leading. Independent testing puts the average EUR/USD spread on the Standard account at about 2.0 pips, which is noticeably wider than the cheapest brokers. The Ultra Low account narrows that to roughly 1.1 pips on average, still without commission. Traders who want raw pricing can use the Zero account, which charges $3.50 per $100,000 per side ($7 round turn) on spreads from 0.0 pips, for an all-in EUR/USD cost of around 0.7 pips upward.

Other charges to watch include overnight swaps (waived on Islamic accounts, which carry their own conditions), a $10 monthly inactivity fee after 90 days without activity, and a VPS service that reviewers report costs $25 per month. Payment providers and banks may also add their own charges, so check the funding page for your country.

Key figure XM
Minimum deposit $5 (Standard, Ultra Low); $10,000 (Shares)
Standard EUR/USD spread (avg.) About 2.0 pips
Ultra Low EUR/USD spread (avg.) About 1.1 pips
Zero account commission $3.50 per side per lot
Maximum leverage Up to 1:1000 (XM Global); 1:30 (EU, Australia retail)

Accounts and products

The current line-up on xm.com consists of Standard, Ultra Low and Shares accounts, with the Zero account offered on some entities. Each can be opened with Islamic swap-free conditions, and all include negative balance protection and allow hedging. A free demo account is available. Minimum deposits are only $5 for Standard and Ultra Low, while the Shares account, which lets clients buy real stocks on some offshore entities, needs $10,000.

Leverage runs up to 1:1000 through XM Global, adjusted under the company's "stable max leverage" policy, while retail clients under CySEC and ASIC are limited to 1:30 on major pairs.

The CFD range covers about 55 currency pairs, precious metals, energies, equity indices, share CFDs and a small selection of about a dozen crypto CFDs. Crypto products are not available from the EU entity.

Platforms and tools

XM offers MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and its own XM app, which also runs in a browser. The MetaTrader versions support Expert Advisors and the full range of indicators. The proprietary app is easy to use and handles account management, funding and trading in one place, but reviewers note it lacks trailing stops, OCO orders and depth of market. There is no cTrader or TradingView integration.

Copy trading is available through the XM app for clients of the international entities, but not from the EU company.

Deposits and withdrawals

XM supports bank wire, credit and debit cards and e-wallets such as Skrill and Neteller, with the exact list depending on the client's country and entity. Minimum deposits are equivalent to $5 in the client's chosen currency. Independent reviewers note that PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay are not supported.

Who XM suits

XM suits beginners and small-account traders in its core markets who want a very low starting deposit, a simple choice of accounts and negative balance protection on every account. Experienced traders on a budget can also benefit from the Ultra Low and Zero accounts. Cost-sensitive scalpers may find better raw pricing elsewhere, and anyone who wants TradingView or cTrader will need another broker.

Verdict

XM offers a low barrier to entry, a clear account structure and negative balance protection on all accounts, backed by CySEC and ASIC entities for European and Australian clients. Its Standard spreads are on the wide side, platform choice is limited to MetaTrader and its own app, and most international clients sit with the Belize-licensed entity. Check which company will hold your account before funding. More information is available on the official XM website.
