Our HFM (HotForex) review

HFM overview

HFM is the current brand of HF Markets, the group that launched in 2010 under the name HotForex. Over the following decade the HotForex name became familiar to retail traders in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and the group later consolidated its marketing under the shorter HFM label. Group sources describe Cyprus as its main base, with offices or registered companies in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Seychelles, Kenya and St Vincent and the Grenadines, and the broker says it serves clients in more than 180 countries.

HFM is primarily a MetaTrader broker. It offers several account types with very low minimum deposits, very high leverage for offshore clients, an in-house copy trading service and a mobile app. The official site is hfm.com. As with many multi-entity groups, the experience differs a lot depending on where you live, so the details below should be read with your own jurisdiction in mind.

Regulation and safety

The HF group lists the following companies on its regulatory disclosure page:

  • HF Markets (UK) Ltd – authorised by the FCA, firm reference number 801701.
  • HF Markets (Europe) Ltd – licensed by CySEC under licence 183/12, with eligible clients covered by the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund.
  • HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd – authorised by the FSCA in South Africa, FSP 46632.
  • HF Markets (Seychelles) Ltd – securities dealer licence SD015 from the Seychelles FSA.
  • HFM Investments Ltd – Kenyan CMA non-dealing online forex broker licence 155.
  • HF Markets (SV) Ltd – an International Business Company registered in St Vincent and the Grenadines (22747 IBC 2015).

The last point matters most for international traders. Many clients of the global website are onboarded by the St Vincent company, which is incorporated there but does not hold a financial services licence, and no compensation scheme applies to it. Clients of the UK, EU and South African entities get stronger protection, but also lower leverage and, in some cases, a narrower product list. Reviewers note that negative balance protection exists for retail clients but can be withdrawn in cases of abusive trading.

HFM's regulatory record is not spotless. In January 2016 CySEC fined HF Markets (Europe) a total of EUR 105,000 over issues that included misleading marketing material, inadequate risk disclosure, failings in record keeping and not recording phone calls with clients. HFM does not accept residents of the United States or Canada, and its international site also excludes the UK, EU and several other countries, which are served by the local entities instead.

Fees and spreads

HFM's account range lets traders choose between spread-only and commission-based pricing:

Account Minimum deposit EUR/USD pricing Commission
Cent $0 Spread only None
Premium $0 Published around 1.4 pips None
Pro $100 Spread only None
Zero $0 From 0.0 pips $3 per lot per side
InfinityX (offshore) $500 Not published Not published

Independent tests suggest the spread-only accounts are on the expensive side for EUR/USD. ForexBrokers.com measured about 1.8 pips on the Pro account, and another test on the UK entity's Premium account averaged close to 1.8 pips in 2026. The Zero account is more competitive: measured raw spreads near 0.2 pips plus the US$6 round-turn commission give an all-in cost of roughly 1.1 pips.

Non-trading costs include an escalating dormant account fee that starts at US$5 per month after six months of inactivity. Swap-free status can be requested for many instruments. HFM's business terms also restrict some styles of trading, including certain scalping, arbitrage and AI-assisted strategies, so high-frequency traders should read them carefully.

Accounts, leverage and markets

Leverage is one of HFM's main selling points for offshore clients. The St Vincent entity offers up to 1:2000 on Cent, Zero, Premium and Pro accounts, and the InfinityX account advertises unlimited leverage on forex. Reviews indicate the Seychelles entity offers up to 1:1000, while UK retail clients are limited to 1:30 on major currency pairs and 1:2 on crypto under FCA rules. Very high leverage magnifies losses as well as gains and is unsuitable for most retail traders.

HFM says it offers more than 500 instruments, covering forex, metals, energies, indices, stocks, ETFs, bonds and crypto CFDs. In practice, the set you see depends on the account and entity; for example, one reviewer counted 344 tradable symbols on an offshore MT5 account, with around 50 currency pairs and roughly 150 share CFDs.

Platforms and copy trading

Trading takes place on MetaTrader 4 (offshore only), MetaTrader 5, a web trader with TradingView-based charts, and the HFM mobile app. There is no cTrader option. Unlimited demo accounts with virtual funds are available on MT4, MT5 and the web trader.

HFcopy, the in-house copy trading service, lets users become strategy providers or follow others, filtering by metrics such as drawdown, risk score and performance fee. PAMM and MAM arrangements are also offered. These services are generally limited to clients of the offshore entity and are not open to new European clients.

Deposits and withdrawals

Funding is flexible and cheap for most international clients. Options include bank transfer, Visa and Mastercard cards, Skrill, Neteller, cryptocurrency deposits in BTC, ETH and USDT, and local payment methods in some regions. Card deposits can start from about US$5, while bank wires typically need at least US$100 and take a few business days. Reviewers did not find withdrawal fees charged by HFM itself.

Main base currencies are USD, EUR and GBP, with regional options such as JPY, CHF, PLN, ZAR, AED, NGN, GHS and KES depending on the entity.

Who HFM suits

HFM is most relevant to traders in Africa, Asia and other emerging markets who want a MetaTrader broker with low entry barriers, local payment methods, a Cent account for small positions and built-in copy trading. Traders who want the safety of a tier-one regulator should make sure they are onboarded by the UK or EU entity, accepting lower leverage and fewer features in exchange.

It is a weaker fit for cost-sensitive traders who use spread-only accounts, for those who want cTrader or deep research tools, and for anyone uncomfortable with an offshore counterparty.

Verdict

HFM combines a long operating history, a recognisable brand and a broad set of licences with very accessible accounts and strong copy trading features. Its Zero account pricing is reasonable, and deposits are easy to make. However, many international clients are served by an unlicensed St Vincent company, spread-only accounts are relatively expensive, offshore leverage is extreme, and the group was fined by CySEC in 2016. Check carefully which HF Markets company holds your account before committing funds.
