Our Interactive Brokers review
Overview
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) was founded in 1977 by Thomas Peterffy and has been listed on Nasdaq since 2007. It is best known as a low-cost, high-capability broker for active traders and institutions. Its main US operating company, Interactive Brokers LLC, is based in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Forex is not the firm's core business, but IBKR is one of the few brokers where you can trade spot currencies at interbank-style prices next to stocks, futures, options and bonds on more than 170 exchanges. ForexBrokers.com counts more than 100 currency pairs and around 8,500 tradeable symbols in its own tests, and the wider exchange-traded universe is much larger.
IBKR's FX model is unlike that of a typical retail CFD broker. Quotes are aggregated from 17 large FX dealers and passed through without a mark-up, and IBKR charges a separate commission based on trade value. This setup favours larger, frequent traders, while very small trades can end up relatively costly because of the per-order minimum.
Regulation and safety
IBKR has one of the broadest sets of top-tier licences in the industry. Interactive Brokers LLC is regulated by the US SEC and CFTC and is a member of FINRA and SIPC. Interactive Brokers U.K. Limited is authorised by the FCA (FRN 208159). Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited, which serves most EU clients, is supervised by the Central Bank of Ireland (ref. C423427).
Other group entities are regulated by ASIC in Australia (AFSL 453554), MAS in Singapore (CMS100917), CIRO in Canada, the SFC in Hong Kong, SEBI in India and the Kanto Local Finance Bureau in Japan. The parent company publishes audited accounts as a listed firm, which adds transparency. You can verify the UK entity on the FCA register.
The record is not spotless. In 2020 IBKR paid about USD 38 million to settle charges from the SEC, CFTC and FINRA over weaknesses in its anti-money-laundering and suspicious-activity reporting. In July 2025 it agreed to pay about USD 11.8 million to the US Treasury's OFAC over apparent sanctions violations between 2016 and 2024, linked to gaps in geo-blocking and screening. Neither case involved losses of client funds, but both point to past compliance weaknesses at a very large firm.
Fees and costs
On IBKR Pro, spot FX commissions start at 0.20 basis points of trade value for up to USD 1 billion of monthly volume and fall to 0.08 bps above USD 5 billion. Each order has a minimum charge of USD 2 at the first tier, dropping to USD 1 at the highest tier. Spreads can be as narrow as a tenth of a pip.
ForexBrokers.com measured an average EUR/USD spread of about 0.23 pips, or about 0.63 pips all-in once a USD 4 round-turn commission per standard lot is included. That is among the lowest costs in its comparison. Automatic currency conversions are priced differently, with a mark-up of up to 0.03% and no separate commission.

| FX commission | 0.20 bps of trade value (min. $2/order), lower at higher volume |
| EUR/USD average spread | ~0.23 pips (raw, before commission) |

Accounts and products
IBKR has no minimum deposit and runs a single main account structure that covers many asset classes. Currencies can be traded as spot FX, as currency CFDs (outside the US), as futures and as options. The account is multi-currency, and ForexBrokers.com notes funding and holdings in about 29 currencies, which is useful if you trade across markets. Retail leverage follows local rules. DailyForex lists retail FX caps of 1:30 for UK, EU, Australian and Canadian clients, 1:20 in Hong Kong and Singapore, and 1:10 in Japan, with higher limits possible for qualifying professionals in some jurisdictions.
US residents face an important restriction. According to ForexBrokers.com, US retail clients cannot trade leveraged forex unless they qualify as Eligible Contract Participants, although they can still convert currencies without leverage. IBKR offers no Islamic swap-free account and no copy-trading service.
Platforms and tools
Trader Workstation (TWS) is IBKR's flagship desktop platform. It is powerful but takes time to learn, with algorithmic order types, an FX trader layout, option analytics and risk dashboards. IBKR Desktop is a newer, simpler desktop client, and Client Portal and IBKR Mobile cover web and phone trading. Accounts can be linked to TradingView, and developers can use IBKR's APIs. A free paper-trading account is available behind a separate login. MetaTrader and cTrader are not supported.
Deposits and withdrawals
Bank transfers are the main way to fund an IBKR account. Card payments and e-wallets such as PayPal and Skrill are not accepted. ForexBrokers.com notes that some regions can fund with crypto or stablecoins through a partner. IBKR does not charge inactivity fees, and incoming international wires are free on its side. Because the account holds many currencies, you can deposit in your home currency and convert only when needed, at institutional-style rates.
Who it suits
IBKR is a strong choice for cost-conscious, experienced traders, especially those trading meaningful size who also want access to global stocks, futures and options. Algorithmic traders and API users get plenty of tools. It suits beginners less well: TWS has a steep learning curve, the USD 2 minimum commission makes micro trades expensive, and there is no social or copy-trading layer. Traders who rely on MetaTrader expert advisors will need to look elsewhere.
Verdict
Interactive Brokers combines very low FX costs, transparent commission pricing and a long list of tier-1 regulators under a publicly listed parent. The 2020 AML settlement and the 2025 OFAC penalty are real negatives, but they concern compliance processes rather than client asset safety. For serious multi-asset traders it ranks among the best overall options. More information is available on the official Interactive Brokers website.
