Our Bitfinex review

Overview

Bitfinex is one of the oldest cryptocurrency exchanges still operating. It launched in December 2012 as a peer-to-peer bitcoin trading venue and is owned by iFinex Inc., a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands.

Over more than a decade it has built a reputation as a venue for professional and high-volume traders, with margin trading, a peer-to-peer lending market for leverage, perpetual derivatives and an OTC desk. It is also one of the most controversial names in the industry because of its 2016 hack, its corporate ties to the stablecoin issuer Tether and a long list of regulatory actions.

In December 2025 it made a headline-grabbing change to its pricing by dropping maker and taker trading fees to zero.

Regulation and safety

Bitfinex is not supervised by a major Western financial regulator. Its derivatives business is run by Bitfinex Derivatives El Salvador, S.A. de C.V., which received a Digital Asset Service Provider licence from El Salvador's National Digital Asset Commission in January 2025. A separate arm, Bitfinex Securities, was licensed by the same commission in April 2023 to handle tokenised securities. CoinGecko lists the exchange as incorporated in the British Virgin Islands with a DASP registration in El Salvador.

The regulatory record contains several negative entries. In June 2016 the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission fined Bitfinex $75,000 over off-exchange financed commodity transactions and failure to register as a futures commission merchant, and in October 2021 the CFTC imposed a further $1.5 million penalty over illegal retail commodity transactions in digital assets with Americans.

In February 2021 Bitfinex and Tether agreed an $18.5 million settlement with the New York Attorney General, which had alleged false statements about Tether's backing and undisclosed movements of money between the two companies after Bitfinex lost access to roughly $850 million held by the Panamanian payment processor Crypto Capital. As part of that outcome Bitfinex continues to bar New York residents.

The 2016 hack and recovery

In August 2016 attackers stole 119,756 BTC from Bitfinex, worth about $72 million at the time. Rather than leave some customers with total losses, the exchange cut every account balance by 36% and issued BFX tokens representing each customer's share of the loss, later followed by Recovery Right Tokens (RRT).

In February 2022 US authorities arrested Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan and seized around $3.6 billion of the stolen bitcoin. Both later pleaded guilty, and in November 2024 Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison and Morgan to 18 months.

In January 2025 US prosecutors asked the court to return about 94,643 BTC, then valued at more than $9 billion, to Bitfinex in kind. iFinex has previously committed to use recovered funds to buy back and burn its LEO token within 18 months of recovery.

Tether links and reserves

Bitfinex and Tether share common shareholders and management, which is why problems at one company have historically raised questions about the other. After the collapse of FTX in November 2022, Bitfinex published a GitHub list of wallet addresses showing roughly 204,338 BTC and 1.2 million ETH held by iFinex. That disclosure covered assets only; it did not prove liabilities, and we found no recurring third-party proof-of-reserves report.

Fees and costs

Since 17 December 2025 Bitfinex charges no maker or taker fees on crypto spot and margin pairs, perpetual derivatives, spot securities pairs or OTC trades. The exchange described the change as long-term strategy rather than a temporary promotion, crediting its profitability and technology. Costs have not disappeared entirely, though: crypto withdrawals carry network-specific fees, fiat bank deposits cost 0.1% with a 60 USD/EUR minimum, standard fiat withdrawals cost 0.1% with a 100 USD/EUR minimum, and express wires cost 1%. Lenders in the margin funding market pay 15% of their interest earnings to Bitfinex (18% for hidden offers).

Products and markets

Spot trading is complemented by margin trading of up to 10x, financed through Bitfinex's peer-to-peer funding market where users lend coins or fiat to margin traders and earn interest. Bitfinex Derivatives lists more than 60 perpetual contracts with leverage of up to 100x, settled in USDt or BTC, and covering crypto as well as some FX and commodity-linked contracts.

Staking rewards are offered on a set of proof-of-stake assets, and the platform also runs Bitfinex Borrow, an OTC desk and the El Salvador-based securities venue. CoinGecko tracks 61 coins and 134 pairs on the spot exchange, a much smaller catalogue than at Binance or Bybit, while third-party reviews count around 100 supported assets.

Platforms and tools

The web and mobile platforms are aimed at experienced users, with advanced order types, detailed charts and a public API widely used by trading bots. The BTC/USD market is available on TradingView under the BITFINEX prefix, and Bitfinex's long price history makes it a common reference chart for analysts.

Deposits, withdrawals and verification

Most users fund accounts with cryptocurrency, which carries no deposit fee. Fiat is handled by bank wire in currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY and CNH, and through OpenPayd accounts for EUR, GBP and USD transfers. Verification is tiered: a basic account can only view the platform, Basic Plus (photo ID, selfie, phone and address) unlocks crypto transfers, and the Intermediate tier, with a second ID, proof of address and a financial questionnaire, is required for margin trading, funding and bank transfers. There is no anonymous trading tier.

Where it is not available

  • United States residents, including New York, are excluded from the whole platform.
  • Residents of Ontario (Canada) and individual UK residents are restricted.
  • Sanctioned territories such as Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and occupied regions of Ukraine are blocked.

Who it suits

Bitfinex suits experienced traders who want zero trading fees, margin and lending tools and deep historical liquidity in major pairs, and who accept the risk of using a lightly regulated offshore venue. Lenders looking to earn yield on idle balances may like the funding market. It is a poor fit for beginners, for anyone who wants a broad altcoin selection, and for users who place regulatory protection and a clean history above cost.

Verdict

Bitfinex now offers some of the lowest trading costs in the market and a mature toolset for active traders, and the planned return of tens of thousands of bitcoin from the 2016 theft closes a long chapter. Against that, its supervision is limited to El Salvador, its reserve transparency has been one-off rather than routine, and its history with Tether, the NYAG and the CFTC is hard to ignore. Check the latest fee schedule and eligibility rules on the official Bitfinex website before opening an account, and keep long-term holdings in self-custody.
