Our OKX review

Overview

OKX began operating around 2017 as OKEx, part of the OK Group founded by Star Xu, and rebranded to OKX in 2022. Its global business is run by a Seychelles-registered operator, and since April 2025 it has a US regional headquarters in San Jose, California. It lists more than 350 cryptocurrencies plus tokenized stocks, and ranks among the largest derivatives venues by volume. Compared with peers, OKX stands out for combining an exchange with a well-developed self-custody Web3 wallet.

Regulation and safety

OKX spent 2024–2025 building a regulated footprint. In January 2025 it announced a MiCA licence through its Maltese hub, supervised by the MFSA, which lets it passport services across the EEA; it also holds a MiFID II licence for European derivatives and a payment institution licence in Malta. Elsewhere it holds a VARA licence in Dubai, a Major Payment Institution licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore and an AUSTRAC registration in Australia.

The key negative is its US history. On 24 February 2025 the Seychelles operator, Aux Cayes Fintech, pleaded guilty in New York to running an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to pay more than $504 million, made up of roughly $420 million in forfeiture and an $84 million fine. A few weeks later, in April 2025, OKX launched a separate US platform.

Security incidents have been limited to peripheral services: a malicious smart-contract update drained about $2.7 million from OKX DEX in December 2023 (users were compensated), and in March 2025 OKX briefly paused its DEX aggregator after it was used to move funds stolen in the Bybit hack. Other user-facing incidents include a flash crash in its native OKB token in January 2024, after which OKX compensated affected users, and SIM-swap attacks in June 2024 that targeted accounts relying on SMS two-factor authentication. The lesson for users is to switch to app-based or hardware-key 2FA.

On reserves, OKX is one of the more transparent exchanges. It has published more than 45 consecutive monthly proof-of-reserves reports, independently verified by Hacken, which checks wallet ownership across more than 650,000 addresses per cycle. A recent report showed about $23.1 billion in primary assets with reserve ratios above 100%, and the programme covers around 200 assets in total.

Fees and costs

OKX moved to a global fee framework in November 2025 that groups pairs by liquidity. Base-tier costs are among the cheapest of the major platforms.

Market (regular user) Maker Taker
Spot – top and mid-tier pairs 0.08% 0.10%
Spot – other pairs 0.10% 0.15%
Perpetual and expiry futures 0.02% 0.05%
Maximum leverage Up to 125x (perpetuals)

VIP tiers reach negative maker fees; a September 2026 notice adjusted only the VIP 7 and VIP 8 rates and left the regular tier unchanged. Crypto deposits are free apart from network costs and in-app crypto conversions carry no OKX fee, while card or third-party purchases typically cost 3–6%. Margin borrowers pay interest that varies by asset. Regional entities (EEA, Singapore, Australia, UAE, US) publish their own fee tables, so rates can differ by country.

Products and markets

With roughly 500 trading pairs, OKX ranks behind only Binance and Coinbase in CoinMarketCap's liquidity ranking according to FXEmpire. The trading suite covers spot, margin (up to 10x on spot), perpetual and dated futures, options and pre-market futures, plus a large bot marketplace and copy trading. Earn products include staking and savings, and Jumpstart is its token-launch platform.

In the EEA, OKX offers stock-linked perpetuals, and globally it provides tokenized US stocks. OKX Pay and the OKX Card extend the ecosystem to payments, and the OKB token is used across the platform. Under its MiCA licence, EEA users can access OTC, spot, bot and copy trading, while local rules in Singapore restrict retail margin and derivatives.

Platforms and tools

OKX's web and mobile apps offer a simplified mode and a full trading interface with TradingView-based charts, a demo trading mode and well-documented APIs. The standalone OKX Wallet supports many blockchains, swaps across DEXs and connects to dapps. Its BTCUSDT spot market appears on TradingView under the OKX prefix.

Deposits and withdrawals

OKX supports more than 80 fiat currencies through bank transfers, cards, Google Pay and third-party providers, and its P2P marketplace charges no platform fee. EEA users can deposit and withdraw euros by bank transfer for free. Identity verification is required to trade and use fiat services. UK users see a reduced list of around 40 tokens.

Who it suits

OKX suits cost-conscious and active traders, especially in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, who want low fees, derivatives and options and also use on-chain tools. US users get a spot-only service, and derivatives are restricted in markets such as the UK, Canada and Hong Kong. Investors who weigh regulatory history heavily should factor in the 2025 guilty plea.

Because OKX serves different countries through different licensed companies, the entity named in your account terms determines which regulator and which investor protections apply, so it is worth checking that page before depositing large sums. Users who mainly want a self-custody wallet with exchange access in one app will find few direct rivals.

Verdict

OKX offers one of the best combinations of low fees, product depth and reserve transparency, and its MiCA licence makes it a regulated choice in the EU. The US criminal case is a notable mark on its record, though it was resolved and followed by a licensed relaunch. Check current terms on OKX's official website.
