Our Gate review

Overview

Gate is one of the oldest exchanges still running. It began in China in 2013 as Bter.com, relaunched as Gate.io in 2017 and rebranded as Gate.com in May 2025. Founder Dr. Lin Han still leads the group. Its main draw is breadth. Gate lists far more tokens than most competitors, with roughly 3,800 according to CoinGecko and an even higher figure on its own website, and its spot market lists more than 2,300 pairs according to Cointelegraph's exchange rankings. The group is linked to George Town in the Cayman Islands. It runs a cluster of licensed entities worldwide, including a separate US company.

Regulation & safety

Gate's licensing has grown considerably. Its main EU entity, Gate Technology Ltd in Malta, received a MiCA CASP authorisation from the Malta Financial Services Authority on 29 September 2025, covering custody, operating a trading platform and crypto/fiat exchange, with EEA passporting. It also holds a PSD2 payment-institution licence from the MFSA. Other group entities include:

  • Gate Technology FZE, a VARA-licensed VASP in Dubai
  • Gate Japan K.K., registered with Japan's FSA as crypto-exchange operator No. 00018
  • an AUSTRAC digital currency exchange registration in Australia
  • Gate Global Limited, approved by the Securities Commission of The Bahamas
  • a GFSC DLT provider authorisation in Gibraltar
  • a CySEC-licensed investment firm in Cyprus
  • Gate US, which holds state money-transmitter licences and offers spot trading only

Gate's history includes several security incidents. In 2015, 7,170 BTC were stolen from a Bter cold wallet. In 2023, on-chain investigator ZachXBT linked a roughly $230 million North Korean theft from 2018 to Gate, which the exchange never publicly confirmed. In 2019, Gate lost funds in an Ethereum Classic 51% attack and covered user losses. Most recently, on 9 August 2026, abnormal price spikes in several smaller perpetual contracts set off liquidations, and Gate pledged USDT compensation.

On reserves, Gate is among the most transparent. Its proof-of-reserves report dated 19 August 2026 showed $8.215 billion in total reserves and an overall reserve ratio of 127%, covering BTC, ETH, major stablecoins, GT, XRP and other assets.

Fees & costs

Gate's help centre uses a 0.1% VIP 0 spot fee in its worked example, and CoinGecko also gives a flat 0.1% base spot fee. Some third-party guides report that entry-tier rates changed in an April 2026 update, so check your account's fee page. Futures start at around 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker. Holding or paying in GT can lower costs further.

Item Figure
Spot maker / taker (VIP 0) 0.10% / 0.10%
Futures maker / taker 0.02% / 0.05%
Max futures leverage Up to 125x
Spot assets 3,800+
Reserve ratio (Aug 2026) 127%

Products

Gate's product list is long. Besides spot, perpetual futures (up to 125x on major contracts) and 10x spot margin, it offers:

  • P2P and instant-buy markets
  • Launchpool, Launchpad and HODLer airdrops for new tokens
  • Simple Earn, dual investment, auto-invest, staking and crypto loans
  • Gate Alpha, for trading early-stage on-chain tokens from the exchange account
  • pre-market trading
  • Gate Web3, a self-custody wallet linked to the exchange
  • Gate Card and Gate Pay for spending

Datawallet also reports thousands of tokenised stocks and ETFs on the global platform. Gate US is a much smaller, spot-only service with roughly 370 tokens.

Platforms & tools

Gate offers web and mobile apps, a desktop client and APIs. The interface carries many features, which some users find cluttered. Advanced traders get full charting, a large derivatives market and API access for their own automated strategies. Because Gate lists so many young tokens, liquidity differs widely between pairs. Majors such as BTC/USDT trade deeply, while a newly listed token may have wide spreads and thin order books. Check order book depth before placing large market orders, and use limit orders where you can. That also usually earns the lower maker rate.

Gate also positions itself as a security-first platform through its Proof of Security programme, which it describes as keeping user funds in cold storage. Users can add their own protection with two-factor authentication, withdrawal whitelists and anti-phishing codes. These controls are worth turning on given the exchange's long incident history.

Deposits, withdrawals & KYC

KYC is required before you can withdraw. Basic verification is usually quick, but document and selfie checks can take longer, and a 24-hour withdrawal hold applies after first verification or security changes. Fiat access includes card purchases and payouts in dozens of currencies, plus P2P. Details depend on which Gate entity serves your country. Withdrawal fees for some assets can be higher than the underlying network cost, so check the fee before sending.

Availability

The global platform is not open to US persons, who are directed to Gate US. Datawallet also names the UK as a restricted country. EEA users are served through the Malta MiCA entity. See the official Gate website for current country rules.

Who it suits

Gate suits traders who want early access to new and niche tokens, many yield and launch products, and solid reserve disclosures. Conservative investors should note the long incident history and the volatility of the small-cap markets that make Gate attractive.

Verdict

Gate has turned a decade-old offshore exchange into a group with a MiCA licence in Malta, a Japanese registration, a VARA licence and a US subsidiary, all backed by a 127% reserve ratio. Fees are competitive and few exchanges list as many coins. Its past hacks and the 2026 perpetual-liquidation episode are reasons to keep position sizes modest. Avoid keeping long-term savings on any exchange, and withdraw to a wallet you control.
